They were initially popular to cover windows that were unglazed, helping to keep out wind, rain, insects and birds. Most shutters could be found on houses between the 18th and 19th centuries, with shutter styles ranging from hinged and sliding timber shutters to Gregorian styles.  ## **Modern window shutters** It is highly unlikely that modern shutters will stop being used in the near future, as they continue to be a classic window treatment, now with a variety of materials and shutter options for every aesthetic.
